This workshop provides a gentle and layered approach to learning, making it both fun and informative. This is suitable for beginners or those with some knowledge just wanting to further hill and mountain skills and confidence.

My specialty is ensuring that participants are not overwhelmed. This is not always a rigid, pre-set course delivered to you; instead, it can be tailored to your pace and individual needs. We will ensure you are comfortable and understand each element before progressing to the next.

Attempting to learn all the skills in a single day can be overwhelming, but this layered approach makes it more likely for the skills to be retained without overwhelming your mind. The pace of walking and delivery is super friendly and we don't cover lots of mileage as this is learning focused.

DAY 1

Introduction to maps

  • Setting the map

Learn to orient a map with the terrain, use a compass for accuracy, and identify key landmarks as reference points. Gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, preparing you for real-world adventures. Embark on this journey of navigation mastery. The tools are there to aid you and not to confuse you.

  • Interpreting symbols

Maps are filled with various symbols that convey a wealth of information about the terrain, including topographical features, trails, and landmarks. In this segment, we will delve into the meaning behind these symbols. Participants will engage in exercises to match symbols with their meanings, enhancing their ability to read and understand maps intuitively.

  • Calculating timings

In this session, we'll focus on how to calculate travel times for different parts of a journey. You'll learn to estimate how long it takes to travel based on distance and the difficulty of the terrain. We'll cover what affects walking speed, like elevation changes and trail conditions. Through hands-on exercises, you'll practice figuring out your expected arrival times at various stops, helping you plan your routes and stay on schedule during your outdoor adventures.

DAY 2

  • Advancing onto steep terrain

Prepare to tackle exciting navigation scenarios on steep and rugged terrain! Participants will face the physical and mental challenges of navigating inclines and declines. We'll cover strategies for maintaining balance, selecting safe paths, and using tools like trekking poles for stability.

  • Understanding contours

Get ready to dive into the exciting world of topographic maps, where contours bring the landscape to life! In this segment, participants will discover how to read contour lines and unlock the secrets of the terrain they depict. We'll delve into fascinating concepts like contour intervals, which reveal the elevation differences between lines, and learn to identify captivating landforms such as hills, valleys, and ridges.

  • Walking on your first bearings

In this hands-on session, participants will put their newfound skills into practice by learning how to walk on bearings. This involves using a compass to navigate in a straight line towards a specific direction, which is essential for reaching a destination accurately. Participants will engage in activities that require them to take bearings and follow them across various terrains, reinforcing their ability to navigate effectively in the field.

  • Learning how to relocate

One of the most important skills in navigation is the ability to relocate oneself when lost or disoriented. In this final session of the day, we will cover techniques for identifying one’s position using a map and compass. And when using tecnology might be your only aid. We will also discuss strategies for staying calm and focused when lost, including the importance of retracing steps and using the map to find familiar features.

Testimonials;

"Did the navigation course last weekend. Kelly did a great job taking us through the basics of map reading and compass work with fun practical exercises. I learnt a lot from the day and can't wait to get into the hills to try the skills out."

"Last Saturday I attended Kelly’s beginner navigation course and it’s one I would highly recommend. Kelly’s approach was relaxed and informal which meant we could easily ask questions. I class myself as a total beginner so learnt a lot that day and was also lovely to meet like minded folks. Kelly was super patient and knowledgable and afterwards sent through some valuable additional resources via email. We talked about a future course with her focussed on night nav and poor vis which I will definitely be taking her up on  Thanks Kelly!"
