I've probably coached over a hundred beginner scramblers who are nervous about trying rock climbing with ropes.

It always surprises me.

Climbing on a rope, under qualified instruction, is an incredibly safe environment to learn. Yet many of those same people are happy to tackle Grade 1 scrambles where there's no rope, bigger exposure, and the consequences of poor movement can be far more serious.

The biggest difference isn't courage.
